During October 2013, USO were the centre of a major arts project at Kings Place, a venue renowned for its classical programming. The Orchestral Mixtape by RWD magazine brought together a variety of hip-hop, rap and grime artists with an 18 piece orchestra and presented by Radio 1's DJ Target for a unique collaboration.
Urban Soul Orchestra's Musical Director Stephen Hussey worked with the different artists and producers involved to create perfect orchestral arrangements for the project. On the night, USO performed with G FrSH, J2K, MC Verse and Khalia.
Stephen Hussey led the orchestra as conductor for the evening. The show opened, however, with a fantastic violin duel between Stephen and first violinist Miles Brett over the top of the dubstep track Tron by Joker.
G FrSH, the final act of the evening, invited Urban Soul Orchestra to adopt his signature black balaclava for a united look during the closing performance of the night.
Over the last 15 years I have have put on hundreds of events, but never have I put together a live project and received a standing ovation which is due to you all.
Matthew Richards, RWD Magazine, 2nd October 2013, Kings Place
The entire orchestra were all very highly skilled and engaging with the audience and artists. Finally they were all really open to doing something new.
