The Urban Soul Orchestra Story
Trusted by

The Origins
Urban Soul Orchestra was founded by Musical Director Stephen Hussey, growing out of his work as an arranger, orchestrator and session musician in London’s recording industry. What began as a collective of session players developed into an orchestra with a distinctive place between the studio, the stage and contemporary music.
From the beginning, USO was built around the idea that an orchestra did not have to belong to one genre. Classical musicianship could sit naturally within soul, pop, dance, electronic and contemporary music, bringing orchestral scale to music and audiences far beyond the traditional concert hall.
Over the years, that approach has taken USO from recording studios and television broadcasts to major concert stages, festivals, international events and the BBC Proms, while the same musicianship, arranging and musical direction remain at the heart of what we do today.

Stephen Hussey | Founder and Musical Director
Urban Soul Orchestra was founded by Stephen Hussey, its Musical Director, arranger, orchestrator and lead violinist. Born in London to Zimbabwean and English parents, Stephen trained in violin and piano at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama before beginning his professional career with the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra, the start of more than three decades working across recording, broadcast and live performance.
Stephen’s work has always crossed genres and musical worlds. As a violinist, arranger, orchestrator and conductor, he has contributed to recordings and projects with Annie Lennox (Nostalgia, Island Records), Liam Gallagher (MTV Unplugged, AIR Studios), Little Mix and Cartier (Cartier in Motion, the Design Museum), alongside work for BBC Radio 2 and Strictly Come Dancing.
That experience continues to shape USO today. From the studio to the concert stage, Stephen remains at the centre of the orchestra’s musical direction, bringing together the players, arrangements and performances that define its sound.
